One of Barack Obama’s biggest supporters in his run for the presidency could be his biggest opponent on the matter of a surgeon general nominee.
Michigan congressional Rep. John Conyers, whose pride over Obama’s election was reflected in his recent raffling of free inaugural tickets for lucky Detroiters, is disappointed about Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s endorsement.
Obama wants the brain surgeon and cable TV correspondent to serve as America’s top health official. But some question Gupton’s qualifications due to his lack of public service experience. Conyers is lobbying to have the Senate block Gupta’s appointment because the two don’t see eye to eye on the question of universal health coverage.
Gupta was publicly embarrassed after disputing filmmaker Michael Moore’s research for the documentary Sicko, which tackles the topic of healthcare. The outspoken Moore challenged Gupta to disprove any facts presented in the 2007 film and Gupta was forced to back down.
Conyers shares Moore’s view on the subject of universal health coverage, supporting coverage that resembles the program offered in Canada.
